Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the proposed 10% increase in the minimum rates of pay for Early Years Educators and School-Age Childcare Practitioners.

The proposals were put forward by the Joint Labour Committee, which represents both employers and workers in the sector, and would impact more than 35,000 staff nationally.

Minister Canney said: “This is a welcome move that recognises the professionalism and commitment of those working in early learning and childcare. These workers play a vital role in the lives of families and communities, and fair pay is essential to retaining skilled staff and ensuring quality services.”

He also welcomed the Government’s commitment to ring-fence €45 million in Core Funding to support providers with the proposed increases in pay and conditions.

If accepted, the proposals will be implemented through updated Employment Regulation Orders.
