Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation that 72,700 people across County Galway will receive the Christmas Bonus this week, as part of Minister Dara Calleary’s announcement of €370 million in payments nationwide.

The Bonus will be paid to pensioners, carers, people with disabilities, lone parents and other long-term social welfare recipients, providing essential support to thousands of Galway households ahead of Christmas.

Minister Canney said the payment represents a major injection into the local economy: “This is a significant boost for families, pensioners and carers across Galway. With over 72,700 people set to receive the Christmas Bonus, this support will be felt in every corner of the county. It provides real help at a time when many households face extra pressures.

I strongly encourage people, where possible, to shop local and support our towns and villages. Every euro spent locally helps small businesses, protects jobs and strengthens our communities.”

Payments will issue on the same day recipients receive their usual weekly payment, with over 1.4 million people nationwide set to benefit.
