Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, Seán Canney TD, has welcomed the launch of a new initiative by the Office of Public Works (OPW) offering inclusive tours for the Sign Language community and people living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, at heritage sites across the country — including Portumna Castle and Athenry Castle in County Galway.
Speaking about the announcement, Minister Canney said: “I warmly welcome this initiative by the OPW which ensures our national heritage is accessible to all. I’m especially pleased that Portumna Castle and Athenry Castles — historic and cultural treasure in my own county — are playing a key role in this inclusive programme.”
The new initiative will see a series of Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreted tours rolled out at OPW sites nationwide, including Athenry Castle, Clonmacnoise, Kilkenny Castle, Dublin Castle, Rathfarnham Castle, and Portumna Castle. These tours offer visitors a rich and engaging experience through the support of trained guides and ISL interpreters.
In addition, Alzheimer and Dementia friendly tours will be hosted free of charge at selected sites, with specially trained facilitators creating a supportive and meaningful experience for individuals and their families.
“Heritage belongs to everyone,” Minister Canney said. “Portumna Castle and Athenry Castle, with their deep history and stunning settings, are now even more open and welcoming to people of all abilities and backgrounds. This initiative shows how inclusion and cultural enrichment can go hand-in-hand.”

Minister Canney also welcomed the OPW’s partnership with Transport for Ireland (TFI), which is providing free access to selected heritage sites for senior citizens using the TFI Local Link service throughout May.
“By connecting accessible transport with heritage experiences, this initiative strengthens social inclusion and rural connectivity. It is a fantastic example of coordinated public service working for the good of our communities.”
