Seán Canney TD, Leader of the Independent Team of Ministers and Minister for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports, has welcomed the announcement of over €18,000 in Government funding to enhance play facilities in Tuam under the 2025 Play and Recreation Capital Grant Scheme.
The funding, announced by Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, will support Galway County Council in improving accessibility and inclusivity in their local play areas. The investment includes: €18,887 for the renovation of the Tuam playground.
Minister Canney said: “I’m delighted to see Tuam benefit from this round of Government funding. These playgrounds are important community assets that bring families together and support children’s development through play. In particular, I welcome the strong focus on accessibility and inclusion in this year’s scheme. Every child should have the chance to enjoy safe and inclusive play, and this funding will help ensure that’s the case in the Tuam area.”
The Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation supports local authorities in developing and upgrading public play spaces, with a special emphasis on universal design and inclusive features such as wheelchair-accessible equipment and sensory play areas. Councils must also consult directly with children and young people and provide matched funding of at least 25%.
Minister Canney added: “I commend Galway County Council for their successful application and for prioritising inclusion in local play infrastructure. This is another example of how targeted Government investment can deliver real, positive outcomes in our communities.”
