Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the announcement by Minister Dara Calleary TD of major improvements to the Carer’s Allowance means test — with 248 carers in Galway set to receive increased payments from today.

“These changes are hugely important for carers in Galway and across the country,” said Minister Canney. “The increase in income disregards will make a real difference for families who are working hard to care for loved ones, often with little recognition or respite.”

From today, the weekly income disregard for Carer’s Allowance increases to €625 for single carers and €1,250 for couples. This change means that over 5,200 carers nationwide, including the 248 in Galway, will see higher payments. In fact, 99% of existing Carer’s Allowance recipients are now entitled to the full rate.

Minister Canney added: “These reforms reflect a wider Government commitment to support carers more effectively. They also follow other important steps – such as the increase in the Carer’s Support Grant to €2,000 and the extension of Carer’s Benefit to the self-employed.”

The Carer’s Benefit income limit has also been increased to €625 per week, opening the scheme up to more people who reduce their working hours or leave employment to provide full-time care.

Minister Canney concluded: “Carers provide such a vital service. I strongly welcome these improvements.”
