Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the significant measures announced in today’s Budget to support Irish agriculture, farmers and rural communities.
Minister Canney said the additional funding represents “a strong commitment to the future of farming and to the families and communities who depend on it.”
Key measures include:
- €85 million in additional funding to more than double the allocation for Bovine TB eradication, enabling rollout of the Bovine TB Action Plan and reducing the risk of future outbreaks.
- An increase of €20 million for the ACRES scheme, bringing total funding to €280 million in 2026 and supporting over 53,000 farmers.
- €20 million to continue the National Sheep Welfare Scheme, benefitting over 17,000 farmers.
Minister Canney also welcomed today’s announcement in the Budget that a further opportunity has been announced for landowners to seek an exemption from the Residential Zoned Land Tax in 2026 where genuine economic activity is taking place.
Minister Canney added: “This Budget reinforces support for farmers and rural communities while ensuring that where appropriate, land is used to meet housing needs. It’s a balanced approach that rewards active development, safeguards agricultural activity, and promotes sustainable growth across our regions.”
