Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the strong local response to the My Little Library initiative, with 2,253 young children in Galway already collecting their free Little Library book bag this year.
New national figures published by Minister Norma Foley show that almost 40,000 children across Ireland have so far benefited from the scheme, which supports the transition from pre-school to primary school and encourages early reading and literacy.
Minister Canney said the high uptake in Galway reflects the value families place on books, learning and their local library. “Seeing more than two thousand families in Galway engage with the My Little Library initiative this year is hugely positive. These book bags help spark a love of reading at an early age and build confidence for children starting primary school. Our libraries play a central role in supporting families, and this initiative strengthens that connection.”
The My Little Library scheme invites all 50,000 children starting primary school each year to visit their local library, pick up a free book bag, and join the library if they are not already a member. Nationally, almost 20,000 children have become new library members this year through the initiative.
Each book bag includes books in English and as Gaeilge, as well as helpful resources for parents, including guidance from First 5, Dyslexia Ireland and Vision Ireland.
Minister Canney encouraged any remaining Galway families to visit their library and avail of the scheme. “There are still some book bags available in libraries. I would encourage parents of five- and six-year-olds who haven’t yet collected theirs to drop into their local branch – it’s a small step that makes a real and lasting difference.”
