Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the strong progress of the East Galway Roscommon Integrated Care Hub, which has now provided timely cardiac care to over 1,000 patients since its launch in April 2023.

Minister Canney said the Hub is a clear example of Sláintecare in action: “This is healthcare delivered where people live – faster appointments, earlier intervention and specialist cardiac care right in the community. It is making a very real difference for patients across East Galway and Roscommon.

Led by Consultant Cardiologist Dr Nuria Farre, the service operates across Tuam, Loughrea, Mountbellew, Ballinasloe, Castlerea and Monksland, offering rapid access for patients with atrial fibrillation, hypertension, heart failure, high cardiovascular risk, complex dyslipidaemia and other cardiac conditions.

Minister Canney praised the Hub’s multidisciplinary team – including Clinical Nurse Specialists, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Heart Failure, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and support staff – for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

The Minister noted that the introduction of direct GP referrals has eased hospital pressures and ensured patients who once faced long waits in acute settings are now being seen promptly in their own communities.

“The feedback from patients has been exceptional,” he added. “People feel supported, informed and looked after. That is exactly what integrated care should deliver.”

The Hub continues to grow as a model for modern, community-based cardiac services, reducing delays, supporting self-management and improving outcomes for patients across the region.
