Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the appointment of Killimordaly GAA and Galway City Council as Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Champions for the 2025–2027 period.

The appointments were announced today by the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien TD, as part of a national programme recognising organisations that are leading by example in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Minister Canney said the inclusion of organisations from Galway reflects the strong commitment across the county to sustainability, community wellbeing and climate action.

“Killimordaly GAA’s selection is a real credit to the role that local community and sporting organisations play in promoting inclusion, health and environmental responsibility at grassroots level,” Minister Canney said. “It shows how local clubs can make a meaningful contribution to national and global goals.”

He also welcomed the appointment of Galway City Council, noting its leadership role in driving climate action and sustainable development at local authority level across the city and wider region.

“The recognition of Galway City Council highlights the importance of strong local government leadership in delivering practical progress on sustainability, climate resilience and quality of life for communities,” he said.

The SDG Champions Programme aims to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and demonstrate how organisations of all sizes can contribute to building a fairer, more sustainable future.
