Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the opening of the 2026 National Sheep Welfare Scheme, which will provide €22 million in support to sheep farmers across the country.
The scheme builds on the strong uptake last year, where just over €21.2 million was paid to almost 16,800 farmers, and continues to focus on practical, on-farm measures that improve flock health, welfare and productivity.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “I know how important targeted, practical supports like this are for sheep farmers right across the country.
“This scheme is straightforward, flexible and designed to work for farmers, while also delivering real improvements in animal health and welfare.”
Under the 2026 scheme, farmers can receive up to €13 per ewe by completing three actions, chosen from a mix of mandatory and voluntary measures.
A new element for this year allows farmers selecting vaccination as one of their actions to choose between clostridial diseases or bluetongue virus, giving greater flexibility depending on farm needs.
Minister Canney is encouraging farmers to take action early: “I would strongly encourage farmers to take a few minutes now to get their application in. It’s a simple process, and applying early avoids any last-minute pressure.”
Applications can be made online at agfood.ie, either by farmers themselves or through an approved advisor.
The closing date for applications is 15 May 2026, with selected actions to be completed by 13 October 2026, or 24 November 2026 where a later completion date is chosen.
