Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed enhancements to the Local Area Hackney licence announced by the National Transport Authority, describing them as a practical step forward for rural communities.
The updated scheme, now open for applications, is designed to make it easier for local people to provide transport services in their own areas, particularly where options are limited.
Minister Canney said: “Reliable local transport is still a real issue in many rural areas, whether it is getting to an appointment, into town, or staying connected.
These changes make it easier for people within communities to step in and provide that service. Local drivers understand local needs, and this scheme supports that in a practical way.”
The Local Area Hackney licence offers a more flexible and affordable option, allowing drivers to operate within their locality rather than nationwide.
Key enhancements include a stronger role for community support in approving applications, the ability for up to five drivers to operate a single vehicle, an extension of licence duration from three to five years, and a new online map to clearly identify eligible areas, all aimed at making the scheme more accessible and responsive to local needs.
Minister Canney added: “This is about strengthening rural connectivity in a simple, practical way. It complements wider investment in rural transport and helps ensure no community is left behind.”
The Local Area Hackney scheme forms part of ongoing efforts to improve transport options in areas where traditional public services may not always be available.
