Carers in Galway East urgently need a local overnight respite service, Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has said.
Minister Canney has called on the Health Service Executive to put a dedicated overnight respite service in place.
Currently, the nearest centre offering the service is in Limerick.
Minister Canney said: “The distance to Limerick is prohibiting carers from Galway East from accessing the service.
“I am aware of many family carers who cannot get an overnight respite service and feel they are trapped. For those who are providing full-time care for their loved one, it is unacceptable that they do not have a service locally.
“Carers provide an unbelievable level of support to those people who need assistance and the HSE has a duty of care to both the cared-for and the carers.
“It is imperative that this service is available in Galway East.”
