Sean Canney Independent TD has welcomed the announcement by the IDA that Dexcom Inc., a global leader in continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes plans to locate its newest global facility in Athenry Co. Galway.

The development will create 1,000 highly skilled permanent jobs and represents and investment of €300million and will provide 500 jobs during the construction phase.

The IDA announcement will also create a spin off in additional opportunities for Athenry and the region and is a major positive news following the disappointment with the Apple project a few years ago.

“Athenry is ready for this development and is well serviced with motorway access, rail access and modern educational facilities in and around the Town”.

“The proposed extension of the Western Rail Corridor north through Tuam to Claremorris will also add to the ability of Athenry in terms of commuter transport for workers and freight transport to service the project on an ongoing basis”.

“With this very positive announcement the business case to connect Athenry to the natural gas network will be strengthened as the connection runs within 1 km of the Town and if connected will attract further business and job opportunities to the region”.

“I commend the IDA on their fantastic record in delivering jobs to the west and I have every confidence we will see more announcements in Athenry, Tuam Gort and Loughrea”.
