Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has received confirmation from the training agency SOLAS that it has been authorised by the Department of Education and Skills to reactivate Safe Pass courses.
The Safe Pass course, which is mandatory for all those employed on construction sites, had been suspended because of COVID-19.
Minister Canney said: “I am very pleased that authorisation has been given to reactivate the courses.
“There is a shortage of workers in the construction industry and it is imperative that the courses resume.
“This move will also be of great assistance to returning immigrants, whose skills are badly needed to deliver our construction projects.
“I also welcome the response from the CEO of SOLAS, Andrew Brownlee, that the agency is working with stakeholders, including the Construction Industry Federation, on a plan for the modernisation of national construction courses.
“This will include a commitment to the utilisation of digital technology as a primary objective.
“I believe we can increase efficiency of delivery of these courses by moving to online training, which should then be of the highest standard.”
