Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has called for the employment status of Community Employment Scheme supervisors to be regularised.
The supervisors are staging a one-day strike today in support of their campaign for public service entitlements, including pensions.
Minister Canney said: “The long running campaign by the Community Employment supervisors to have their employment status recognised by the Department for Social Protection has been ignored for years.
“The Labour Relations Commission has stated that Community Employment Scheme supervisors are entitled to be recognised as employees and receive their statutory entitlements, including pension rights.
“The cost of recognition is outweighed by the enormous community work being carried out by the supervisors all over the country.
“It is sad that the supervisors have had to take this action in support of their claim but they have been unrecognised for 30 years. It is time for the issue to be resolved in their favour.
“Without the schemes and the invaluable contribution of the supervisors, much-needed community work would not be carried out.”
