Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has confirmed that contracts have been signed for the new NCT Centre in Tuam.
Minister Canney said: “This is great news. It means more jobs for Tuam and it will bring more business into the town.
“Contracts have been signed and I expect the building of the new centre to be completed shortly.
“The use of the former Hi-Way garage site on the Dublin Road was first suggested five years ago and I am delighted that it is now finally happening.
“It is great to see a site being brought back into use. We will also see buildings being refurbished as part of the plan to regenerate of Tuam town centre: The old library in Shop Street will become an Intreo Centre, the old Grove Hospital will become a Mental Health Day Care Unit and the Courthouse is being refurbished by the Office of Public Works in conjunction with the Department of Justice.
“My department, the Department of Rural and Community Development, has also allocated €175,000 under the Rural Regeneration Fund to bring forward a master plan for the town centre, which will include the regeneration of the railway station site, the old fire station site and the town hall.
“I anticipate that plan being submitted for further funding going forward.”
