The Government has designated credit unions as an essential service during the COVID-19 crisis.
The move recognises that credit union members face financial difficulties resulting from the current pandemic and that Credit Unions are an essential community support and financial platform.
Irish League of Credit Unions Chief Executive Officer Ed Farrell has said that credit unions are under an obligation to be as accessible as possible within the current health guidelines.
Members who are experiencing financial difficulties or anticipating them should make contact with their credit union immediately to discuss what arrangements can be put in place.
In the interests of social distancing, credit unions are asking members to make contact by phone, email or online in the first instance and if a face to face meeting is required, an appointment will be made.
As a volunteer-led co-operative movement, Mr Farrell said that credit unions would endeavour to offer flexible arrangements that cater for the different impacts of COVID-19 on each individual member.
