Seán Canney TD has said the Government has made “real and measurable progress” on Just Transition since 2021, and that this work is now directly benefiting communities in Ballinasloe Municipal District.
Speaking as the Dáil debated a Private Members’ Bill on Just Transition, Minister Canney said the Government’s programme already includes the key elements set out in the Bill and is well advanced.
“Since 2021 we have embedded Just Transition into national climate policy, established a dedicated Commission, and secured major investment through the EU Just Transition Fund. Communities in designated territories, including Ballinasloe Municipal District, are already positioned to benefit from this work.”
Ballinasloe Municipal District is part of the designated EU Just Transition Fund territory, ensuring that local enterprises, community organisations and tourism initiatives are eligible to access transition supports as Ireland moves to a low-carbon economy.
Minister Canney said this eligibility provides real opportunities for local development: “The inclusion of Ballinasloe Municipal District in the Just Transition territory means new avenues for enterprise, skills development and sustainable community projects. It places the area on a strong footing for future investment.”
The Minister said the Government’s approach ensures that Just Transition is structured, evidence-based and continuously developing. The newly established Just Transition Commission will undergo a scheduled review in mid-2026 to inform its long-term statutory footing.
“We have a practical and active Just Transition framework in place. The priority now is to let the Commission continue its work, engage with communities and provide the support needed to deliver a fair and managed transition.”
