Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the latest housing commencement figures, showing a clear increase in activity across Galway.

In March 2026, 131 homes were commenced in Galway County, up from 44 in March 2025.

In Galway City, 71 homes were commenced, compared to no commencements in March last year.

There has also been an increase on last month, with Galway County up from 72 in February, and Galway City up from 49.

Minister Canney said: “These numbers are a step in the right direction. The increase compared to last year is significant.

“But what’s also important is that we’re now seeing that continue month to month. That tells you activity is picking up again on the ground.”

Nationally, 2,939 homes were commenced in March, which is up 293% on the same month last year. A total of 8,408 homes have been commenced so far this year.

He said the focus now has to remain on delivery: “Starting homes is one thing – getting them built and finished is what really matters for people.

“We will continue to work across Government to keep progress moving and to support the delivery of homes as quickly as possible.”
