Minister Canney urges East Galway communities to help conserve water during warm weather

Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, is encouraging households, businesses and farmers across East Galway to do what they can to conserve water as warm weather continues to place increasing pressure on local supplies.

Uisce Éireann has renewed its appeal to customers, particularly in Athenry, Clarinbridge, Kilcolgan and Ballinderreen, where treated water supplies are under significant pressure due to sustained high demand.

Minister Canney said: “The warm weather is very welcome, but it also brings increased demand for water. I would encourage everyone across East Galway, particularly in Athenry, Clarinbridge, Kilcolgan and Ballinderreen, to be mindful of their water use over the coming days.”

Customers are also being encouraged to check their properties for leaks, such as damp patches on lawns or driveways. Uisce Éireann’s First Fix Free scheme provides free repairs for qualifying underground leaks on private property once they have been identified.

Minister Canney also encouraged people to report leaks on the public water network by contacting Uisce Éireann’s 24-hour customer service line on 1800 278 278.

Simple steps to help conserve water include:

  • Checking for leaking taps, pipes and overflowing tanks.
  • Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Choosing a shower instead of a bath where possible.
  • Avoiding the use of hoses and sprinklers.
  • Collecting rainwater for use in gardens.
  • Ensuring washing machines and dishwashers are fully loaded before use.
  • Checking farm drinking troughs for leaks or overflows.
  • Reducing unnecessary toilet flushing where appropriate.

Further water conservation advice, including Uisce Éireann’s water conservation calculator, is available at www.water.ie/conservation.
