Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the Government’s decision to extend the temporary reductions in fuel excise duty and the National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) Levy until 31 August following discussions between the Government leaders.
The Government has confirmed that the full reductions in fuel excise duty will remain in place until 31 August. The enhanced Diesel Rebate Scheme for qualifying road haulage and coach operators will continue until 30 September, while excise rates will return to their normal levels on a phased basis between September and December. This measure helps mitigate the increased cost of business for road haulage firms, coach operators and the wider economy dependent on road haulage for distribution.
Minister Canney said: “For rural communities in particular, the cost of transport has a significant impact on daily life. Whether travelling to work, bringing children to school, running a farm or operating a business, many people depend on their vehicles every day. Extending these measures will continue to provide important support while energy markets remain uncertain.”
The extension means motorists, farmers, businesses and hauliers will continue to benefit from lower fuel costs, while excise rates will now be restored gradually between September and December rather than ending abruptly. The temporary enhancement to the Diesel Rebate Scheme for qualifying hauliers and road transport operators has also been extended until 30 September.
Minister Canney, who was involved in the Government leaders’ discussions on the package, said: “Today’s decision reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting households and businesses while responding to changing circumstances in the energy market. Although fuel prices have eased in recent weeks, uncertainty remains, and extending these measures provides continued reassurance for people and businesses across the country. In my role as Minister for International and Road Transport and Logistics, I’ve held a number of meetings with those directly impacted by the increase in fuel costs and have taken that feedback on board.
“The phased restoration of excise rates over the coming months is a sensible approach. It avoids a sudden increase in costs and gives people and businesses greater certainty as these temporary supports are gradually withdrawn.
