Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the completion of a significant phase in the redevelopment of Ceannt Station, with new platforms 3 and 4 now in service.

The milestone, reached the weekend before last, means passengers can now make use of two additional platforms alongside the new southern entrance, concourse and waiting area, upgraded toilet facilities and new ticket validators.

This follows the completion of the curved glazed roof and new platform 5 in late 2025, marking another milestone on what is a major transformation project for Galway.

Welcoming the update, Minister Canney said: “It’s great to see real progress on the ground at Ceannt Station. The opening of these new platforms, along with the improved facilities, is already making a difference for passengers using the station every day.

“This project is about delivering a modern, accessible transport hub in the heart of Galway, and we’re now seeing that take shape.”

The latest phase means that approximately half of the station footprint has now reopened to the public, helping to improve passenger flow and deliver a more streamlined experience for rail users.

Work will now move to the northern side of the station, with Platform 1 closing for redevelopment. Works on Platform 2 are continuing and are expected to be completed over the coming months, alongside the introduction of an enhanced retail offering within the station.

The Ceannt Station redevelopment is being funded through the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and the National Transport Authority, and will deliver a fully integrated and fully accessible transport hub for the city.
