Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the launch of a new national strategy for Further Education and Training (FET), saying it will help ensure people across the country have the skills and opportunities needed for the future.

The new five-year strategy, Creating Futures 2026–2030, was launched this week and is built around four key pillars:

  • Future-Ready Knowledge & Skills
  • Inclusion for Prosperity and Cohesion
  • Quality and Innovation
  • Collaborating for Impact

It sets out a vision for a more flexible, inclusive and future-focused Further Education and Training system, with a strong emphasis on lifelong learning, apprenticeships, digital and AI skills, green innovation and pathways into employment and higher education.

More than 400,000 people participated in Further Education and Training across Ireland in 2025, reflecting growing demand for practical, accessible learning opportunities at every stage of life.

Welcoming the strategy, Minister Canney said: “Further Education and Training has become one of the most important ways for people to upskill, retrain or take a new direction in life. Whether someone is returning to education, building skills for a new career, starting an apprenticeship or improving their qualifications while working, FET gives people real opportunities.

“This strategy recognises how much the world of work is changing, particularly with developments in AI, technology and the green economy. We need to make sure people have access to flexible learning and practical skills that meet those changes, and this plan is about making that happen.

“It’s also about inclusion. Good education and training opportunities should be available to everyone, no matter their age, background or where they live. That is especially important for rural and regional areas, where local access to education and skills development can make a real difference to people, families and businesses.”

Minister Canney said Education and Training Boards and local education providers will continue to play a key role in supporting learners and employers over the coming years.
