Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the opening of the new On-Farm Badger Biosecurity Scheme, saying it will provide practical support to farmers working to protect their herds from bovine TB.
The new €6 million scheme forms part of the Government’s wider Bovine TB Action Plan and is aimed at helping farmers put additional biosecurity measures in place on their farms.
Under the scheme, farmers can receive grant support towards the cost of fencing off badger setts and purchasing specialised feed and water troughs designed to reduce contact between badgers and cattle.
Minister Canney said bovine TB continues to place huge strain on farm families, both financially and emotionally, and said any practical measure that helps reduce outbreaks is important.
“TB outbreaks can have a massive impact on farm families. There is the financial pressure, but there is also the stress and uncertainty that comes with it.
“This scheme is about giving farmers practical support to help reduce risk on their farms and protect their herds.
“Farmers are already doing huge work around biosecurity and herd management every day. Measures like this can make a real difference in helping to limit the spread of disease and reduce the worry many families face when dealing with TB restrictions.”
The scheme will remain open for applications until 31 May 2026. Applications must be submitted by email to [email protected]
Eligible farmers can apply for grant aid of 40% on approved biosecurity materials, up to a maximum eligible spend of €2,000 excluding VAT.
To qualify, applicants must have submitted a 2025 BISS application and have bovine livestock on their holding in 2026.
Following approval from the Department of Agriculture, farmers will be able to purchase approved materials from participating co-ops and agri-retailers between 1 July and 31 August 2026.
Further information, including terms and conditions and the list of participating co-ops and agri-retailers, is available through the Department of Agriculture website on https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-agriculture-food-and-the-marine/publications/financial-support-for-farmers/#on-farm-badger-biosecurity-scheme
