Seán Canney, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has said the planned appointment of Financial Literacy Ambassadors is a positive and practical step in helping people feel more confident about managing their money.

Ireland will appoint up to two ambassadors as part of a wider European effort to strengthen financial awareness and encourage more open conversations about money.

Minister Canney said: “For many people, talking about money still feels uncomfortable. There’s a sense that you should just ‘know’ how it all works  but that’s not the reality.

The truth is that managing finances today can be complicated. Between digital banking, online payments and everyday cost pressures, people are dealing with a lot.

If we can have trusted ambassadors helping to break down information in a clear and straightforward way, that’s a good thing. It makes it easier for people to ask questions and build confidence.”

The appointments will sit alongside the ongoing work under Ireland’s National Financial Literacy Strategy, which aims to improve financial skills and resilience over the coming years.

Minister Canney added: “Financial literacy isn’t abstract. It’s about real life – understanding your wages, planning for the unexpected, knowing what you’re signing up to.

When people feel more secure about their finances, it reduces stress and gives them more control. That’s what this is about.”
