Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation that the 06:50am weekday rail service from Athenry to Galway will be retained on a permanent basis.

The early morning service was introduced on a temporary basis last October to facilitate operational arrangements during works at Ceannt Station. It had been due to end later this month, but following strong passenger demand, the National Transport Authority has approved its retention. The service will also be included in the 2027 timetable.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “This is very positive news for commuters in Athenry, Oranmore and the surrounding areas who have made great use of this early morning service since it was introduced. Its success shows there is a real demand for more rail options, particularly for people travelling to work, education and other appointments in Galway.”

“The decision to retain the service permanently is a practical improvement that will make a real difference to people’s daily journeys. It also reflects the Government’s commitment to expanding public transport and encouraging more people to choose rail.”

Minister Canney also welcomed the confirmation that work at Ceannt Station is nearing completion and that the expansion of Oranmore Station is continuing, creating the capacity for further improvements to rail services in the future as additional fleet becomes available.
