Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has warmly welcomed confirmation of €6.6 million in funding for the redevelopment of the derelict Tuam Railway Station House. The funding is being provided under the THRIVE scheme, which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union under the Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021-2027.

Part 8 planning for the project was granted earlier this year, and the ambitious plans will see the transformation of the building into a vibrant new facility for the town. The development will include:

  • A state-of-the-art enterprise hub with individual enterprise suites
  • A dedicated podcast studio
  • A café/canteen area
  • A multi-use community and event/educational space

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “I am delighted that this significant funding under the THRIVE scheme has now been approved for the redevelopment of Tuam Station House. This project will breathe new life into a landmark building in our town, creating new opportunities for enterprise, education, culture, and community use. It is another important step forward in the ongoing regeneration of Tuam, and I want to commend all involved in bringing the plans to this stage.”

Minister Canney added that the project will serve as a catalyst for further investment and growth in Tuam. “This development will ensure that Tuam Station House is not only preserved but is reimagined to meet the needs of today and tomorrow.”

The Station House project is the first phase of a larger regeneration of the overall station lands involving a partnership between Galway County Council and Irish Rail.
