Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed confirmation from Uisce Éireann that major wastewater schemes in Mountbellew and Ballygar are progressing towards construction.
The tender process for the procurement of a contractor is well underway for both projects. Planning is in place for Ballygar and planning has been submitted for approval on Mountbellew, with construction on both projects expected to begin in the second half of 2026, subject to statutory approvals. Minister Canney had previously received confirmation from Uisce Éireann in May that the projects were advancing to tender.
The combined investment for the Mountbellew and Ballygar Sewerage Schemes stands at almost €40 million, representing a major commitment to modernising essential wastewater infrastructure in rural Galway.
Minister Canney said: “It is great to see tangible progress on the Mountbellew and Ballygar schemes. This is a vital investment of almost €40 million in the heart of County Galway. These projects will not only protect our environment and public health, but also support population growth and housing development in both towns.”
He added: “It is also a timely boost for Mountbellew, given the introduction of the new Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery course being delivered through Mountbellew Agricultural College and ATU. Upgrading wastewater infrastructure will ensure the town is equipped for future growth and educational development.”
Minister Canney has been engaging consistently with Uisce Éireann on both projects and welcomed their confirmation that the procurement process is progressing well.
He concluded: “It’s encouraging to see the projects moving steadily through the pipeline, with construction to start in 2026. I will continue to monitor the progress of these projects to ensure their delivery in the earliest possible time.”
