Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has received confirmation that the tender process for the new Intreo centre in Tuam has begun.
The centre, which will be co-funded by the Office of Public Works and the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, will be sited at the Old Library in Shop Street. The refurbishment of the building represents an investment of circa €6 million in the town.
Minister Canney said: “This is great news that adds another important element to the regeneration of Tuam Town Centre.
“The Intreo Centre will bring together all social welfare services. The refurbishment of the Old Library will effectively open up a new public building in the centre of Tuam.
“This is the pre-qualification stage for tenders. Those interested need to apply before September 30 so that a select list can be drawn up. They will then be invited to tender for the project. Following the tendering process, a contractor will be appointed to enable construction to begin next year.
“The project was delayed because of a legal query about the original planning application but revised planning permission was given by Galway County Council in March.
“I advanced this project when I was Minister of State in the Office of Public Works.
“Recently I held discussions with OPW officials in order for the project to be progressed and I very much welcome that it is moving towards completion.”
