Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney has received confirmation that Galway County Council is to seek tenders for pedestrian works at two locations in Tuam.
The first location is the Galway Road, where tenders will be sought for two pedestrian crossings.
Minister Canney said: “The road was the main route north to Sligo but with the opening of the by-pass, its function has changed.
“The installation of pedestrian crossings is part of an overall plan to integrate the road into the infrastructure of the town.
“There are many residential estates so pedestrian crossings are essential for safe walking and access to shops and schools.
“Further funding will be required to install a cycle and walking lane along with improved lighting to connect to other cycle and walking lanes around the town.
“The council is also seeking tenders for the extension of the footpath and public lighting from the new NCT Test Centre to the Toghermore estate entrance. This project is being funded through the Department of Transport to the value of €50,000.
“The project will provide for a safe walking route to Toghermore and will again add to the walking amenities available within Tuam.”
