I welcome the news that Global solutions Company XPO Logistics and Irish Rail have announced the commencement of a new twice weekly rail freight services between Ballina and Waterford Port.
“The new service will see the potential for over 5,000 truck movements to switch from road to rail and save on road congestion and reduce our carbon emissions”.
“I also welcome the statement by Jim Meade CE of Irish Rail who said his company are entering an exciting phase where rail freight can offer key solutions for the movement of freight as we tackle Climate Action”.
“The new rail freight service between Ballina and Waterford is in addition to the existing rail freight operation which include container traffic from Ballina to Dublin Port, Pulpwood from Ballina and Westport to Waterford Port and Zinc ore from Tara Mines to Dublin Port”.
“The protentional for rail freight as a way of reducing our carbon emission is enormous and we need to ensure that we connect the west to this green way of transporting freight”.
“The opening of the rail link between Claremorris and Athenry will create access along the West for rail freight from the region to connect to Galway, Foynes, Cork and Waterford Port”.
