Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, says that a new private operator- Citylink – has been secured to continue the Route 52 bus service between Ballina and Galway.
Citylink will commence services immediately following the withdrawal of the current Bus Éireann Expressway service on Sunday, 24 May, ensuring there is no gap in service for passengers who rely on the route.
Citylink already operate a route from Ballina to Galway and will now provide 3 additional return services on that route daily, bringing the number of daily return services to 8.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) went out to the market once Bus Éireann announced their decision and this is the result of that engagement.
Welcoming the development, Minister Canney said: “People across Mayo and Galway were extremely concerned about the possible loss of this service and the impact it would have on daily life for many communities along the route.
“I am very pleased that a new operator has now been confirmed and that services will continue from the end of May.
“This route is hugely important for people travelling to work, college, appointments and onward transport connections. For many communities, it is an essential public transport link.
“I want to acknowledge the work of the National Transport Authority in engaging with the market and moving quickly to ensure continuity of service and wish Citylink all the best.”
Minister Canney added: “Reliable regional public transport is critically important, particularly for rural communities, and this announcement will come as a real relief to the many people who depend on the service every day.”
