Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the opening of a new fuel support scheme for specialist horticulture growers, aimed at helping producers facing significant increases in fuel costs.

The scheme will provide up to €2 million in support for growers producing tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, strawberries and chillies. It forms part of the wider €100 million Government fuel income support package introduced in response to recent fuel price pressures linked to the Middle East crisis.

Applications for the scheme are due to open next week through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, with eligible growers encouraged to apply once the online portal becomes available.

Minister Canney said the support recognises the important role Ireland’s horticulture sector plays in food production, employment and local economies.

“Horticulture producers have been under real pressure due to rising fuel and energy costs, particularly those operating in specialist growing sectors where heating and production costs are significant. This scheme is a very important support and will help provide certainty for growers at a challenging time,” Minister Canney said.

“The horticulture sector is hugely important for jobs, for local food production and for supporting more sustainable, locally grown produce. Supporting Irish growers also helps reduce reliance on imports and strengthens food security.”
