Seán Canney, Independent TD has welcomed the launch of the Wool Feasibility Study which he said may see the value of wool coming out of the doldrums.
‘The study will examine the future of the woollen industry in Ireland and seek ways of creating demand for this unique natural material. The collapse in the price of wool has led to this valuable resource going to waste.
‘Sheep farmers need a boost in the price of wool and it is obvious that wool can play an important role in the drive to use organic materials.
‘Wool has had many uses traditionally and there are numerous new uses including as insulation in buildings. This feasibility study will capture all the potential and deliver a viable return for sheep farmers.
‘Wool produced in this country has been vastly underused. There is scope to revitalise the wool market in this country and create sustainable jobs in the regions.’
