Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has highlighted the latest performance figures for the First Home Scheme, which show that 154 drawdowns have been recorded in Galway since the scheme launched in July 2022.

The Q3 2026 update shows that 308 approvals have been issued across Galway County and City, with 198 approvals and 97 drawdowns in Galway County and a further 110 approvals and 57 drawdowns in Galway City.

Nationally, the scheme has supported the purchase or construction of 6,537 homes, with over €439 million in financial support provided to homebuyers.

The latest figures, covering the period to the end of September 2026, show:

  • 12,242 approvals issued nationally.
  • 8,240 contracts issued.
  • 6,537 homes purchased or built.
  • 1,094 new approvals issued during Q3 2026.
  • 654 homes purchased or built during Q3 2026.
  • €67,194 average financial support received per buyer.
  • 67% of scheme users also availing of the Help to Buy Scheme.

Minister Canney said: “The First Home Scheme is making a difference for people who have secured a mortgage and saved a deposit but still face a shortfall when trying to purchase or build their own home.

“In Galway County and City, 308 approvals have been issued and 154 drawdowns recorded since the scheme began, helping people to take that important step towards home ownership.

“For many first-time buyers, the gap between what they can borrow and the cost of a new home remains a significant challenge. This scheme helps bridge that gap and makes home ownership possible for people who might otherwise be unable to afford it.

“I would encourage anyone considering purchasing or building their first home to look at the supports available and check whether they qualify.”

The First Home Scheme is a Government-backed shared equity scheme which provides financial support to eligible buyers who cannot meet the full purchase price or build cost of a new home through their mortgage and deposit.

The scheme can provide up to 30% of the purchase price or build cost, or up to 20% where the buyer is also availing of the Help to Buy Scheme. In return, the scheme takes an equity stake in the property.
