Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed Government approval for the establishment of a new National Forum on Inclusive Education for Students with Special Educational Needs, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen supports for children and families across the education system.

The Forum, which will begin its work in September, will bring together education stakeholders, disability organisations, parents, Government departments and independent experts to develop a shared national vision for inclusive education and identify practical measures to better support students with special educational needs.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said: “Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, participate and thrive in an education system that recognises and supports their individual needs. This new Forum will bring together the voices and expertise needed to help shape a more inclusive education system for the future.”

“Many schools are already doing excellent work to support children with additional needs, but there is always room to build on that progress. The Forum will provide a valuable opportunity to identify practical improvements that will benefit students, families, teachers and school communities right across the country.”

Minister Canney also welcomed the Government’s commitment to maintaining strong supports across mainstream schools, special classes and special schools.

“Inclusive education is about ensuring every child receives the support that is right for them. Special schools and special classes remain an essential part of our education system, and this work recognises the importance of maintaining a full continuum of educational provision while continuing to strengthen inclusion in every school.”

The Forum will operate for approximately six months before reporting to Government with recommendations on the future development of inclusive education policy. Its work will examine areas including school leadership, teacher professional development, improved transitions between educational settings, whole-school approaches to inclusion and the sharing of best practice across the education system.
