Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the allocation of funding for improvements at two popular outdoor swimming locations in Galway East under the Healthy Ireland Outdoor Swimming Initiative.

A total of €25,000 has been allocated to Galway County Council, with the funding to be shared between projects at The Long Point, Loughrea, the Portumna Swimming Area at Lough Derg Water Recreation Park, and Trá an Dóilín (Coral Strand) in Carraroe.

The funding will support improvements including an accessibility hoist, changing shelters and shower facilities, helping to make outdoor swimming locations safer, more welcoming and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Canney said outdoor swimming has become increasingly popular in communities across Galway and that continued investment in local facilities will help even more people enjoy the benefits it offers.

“Outdoor swimming has grown enormously in popularity over recent years, with more people discovering the physical and mental health benefits it provides.

“I’m particularly pleased to see funding being invested in facilities at both Loughrea and Portumna. These are wonderful amenities that are enjoyed year-round by local people, swimming groups and visitors alike.

“We are fortunate to have outstanding natural swimming locations throughout Galway. These enhancements will benefit local communities while making these locations even more welcoming for everyone who wants to get active outdoors.”

Minister Canney also congratulated Galway County Council on securing the funding and said he looked forward to seeing the improvements completed ahead of the 2026 outdoor swimming season.
