Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed new figures showing that almost 34,000 homes and businesses in Galway can now access high-speed fibre broadband through the NBI network, with almost 12,000 already connected.
A total of 41,000 Galway premises are included in the National Broadband Plan’s Intervention Area, representing €153 million in Government investment. The Intervention Area will see NBI deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms, and schools across the county.
Minister Canney – who was centrally involved in the creation of the National Broadband Plan in 2019 as Minister of State for Natural Resources, Community Affairs and Digital Development and Chair of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce, working alongside then Minister Richard Bruton – said the rollout is continuing to make a real difference across the county.
“This is real progress for Galway. Almost 34,000 homes and businesses can now order high-speed fibre broadband, and nearly 12,000 are already connected.
“That means people are seeing the difference in their day-to-day lives – whether that’s working from home, running a business, studying, or simply staying connected.
“There’s more to do, but the rollout is moving well, and I’d encourage people to check their Eircode on nbi.ie to see when they can connect.”
Galway progress:
• 33,797 premises now able to pre-order/order
• 11,953 connections completed
• Rural rollout substantially complete in many areas, including Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Athenry and Maam
Nationally, NBI has now passed over 465,000 homes, farms and businesses, with almost 172,000 connections made and strong take-up across the country.
Households and businesses can check availability and sign up for updates at nbi.ie.
