Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the launch of a new independent counselling service for foster carers, delivered by Tusla and supported through the Dormant Accounts Fund.
The LENA service gives foster carers and their children aged 16 and over access to free, confidential counselling in a way that’s simple and private.
Minister Canney said: “Foster carers do a very important job. They take on a huge responsibility, and while it’s rewarding, it can also be demanding.
“This service gives them somewhere to turn when they need it. They don’t have to go through anyone else to ask for support, and that will make it easier for people to reach out early.”
Under the service, foster carers can access up to six counselling sessions each year, with further supports available where needed. Sessions can be arranged in person, over the phone or online, depending on what suits.
Access is straightforward – carers can refer themselves or be referred, with their consent, through their social work team.
Minister Canney added: “This is about recognising the reality of fostering. People are giving so much of themselves to support children, and it’s only right that they have proper supports in place too.
The LENA service is now available nationwide, seven days a week.
Foster carers can contact the service directly on 1800 817 433.
