Seán Canney TD, Minister of State for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports and Leader in Cabinet of the Independent Ministers, has welcomed the launch of a new BSc (Hons) in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology at Atlantic Technological University (ATU).

The new CAO programme is the first undergraduate programme of its kind to be delivered collaboratively from ATU’s Mayo and Galway campuses.

Students will undertake their first year at the Mayo campus in Castlebar before progressing to ATU’s Galway City Dublin Road campus for years two and three.

The programme will explore how psychology influences sport, exercise and human performance, including areas such as motivation, mental health and well-being, behaviour change and decision-making. It will prepare graduates for careers across sport, health, exercise, coaching, performance analysis and athlete support.

Minister Canney, who previously lectured at GMIT, now part of ATU, said: “This is an excellent addition to the range of programmes available at ATU and particularly significant in bringing together the expertise and facilities of the Mayo and Galway campuses.

“Having lectured at GMIT myself, I know the importance of continuing to develop courses that respond to emerging opportunities and provide students with strong career pathways.

“Sport and performance psychology is a growing area, and this new degree will give students the opportunity to develop skills that can be applied across sport, exercise, health and performance settings.

Applications for the BSc (Hons) in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology will open through the CAO on 5 November 2026.
