CRACK DOWN ON ILLEGAL DUMPING

Welcome news that the Government has announced €3 million in funding for its Anti-Dumping Initiative to crack down on illegal fly-tipping.
It is a serious problem throughout the West and we need a community effort to stamp it out.
The funding will be targeted at new initiatives like drone surveillance, special collections for items like mattresses and spreading public awareness through education.
Our existing anti-dumping measures have taken 5,000 tonnes of waste out of some of the country’s most notorious fly-tipping areas but we need to do more.
When we clamp down on dumping black spots, it greatly reduces the chances of re-offending.
The €3 million is 50% up on last year’s allocation, It comes on top of an annual enforcement grant of €7.4 million, which helps pay for 150 local authority waste personnel around the country.
