I recently visited Oughterard Trout Hatchery to see the great work that is being done by the angling club there.
As Minister of State in the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment. inland fisheries is part of my responsibilities.
The hatchery is the oldest running hatchery in the world, having begun its operations as a salmon hatchery in 1852. It became a trout hatchery at the turn of the 20th century.
The hatchery is owned by Lough Corrib Angling Federation and is run on a voluntary basis by local anglers.
