A review of the baseline funding being provided to local authorities is underway and it is important that Galway County Council benefits from the outcome of the review.
It is widely accepted that Galway County Council has been a victim of an inequitable system in the distribution of local government funding in recent years. This has meant that Galway County Council has not been able to deliver all of the necessary services to people living in the region.
This review should be used as a mechanism to correct this inequality and imbalance. The recent report on the proposed amalgamation of Galway County Council and Galway City Council highlighted the lack of funding for Galway as the primary issue that needs to be sorted out in the future. I confirm that I will be making a very strong submission on this in advance of the closing date on July 3rd.
